As we move deeper into the digital age, we’ve developed a subconscious need for more stimulating visuals. Gone are the days when we could be satisfied with 480p on YouTube. Nowadays, even 720p simply isn’t enough. We crave higher resolutions, difficult-to-understand concepts, and hard-hitting visuals.

Cue production companies, like, well, us.

People often underestimate the importance of having a strong prodco behind them when it comes to creating a reel. For actors, it is slowly becoming less and less acceptable to create home videos. Casting directors want to see that significant effort was made putting together a strong reel. This is not to say that talent comes secondary to production; but, at the end of the day, humans react better to visual stimulants versus distracting production quality of lesser value. Solid production in a demo reel should complement  how onscreen content is perceived. Strong production value can significantly affect your chances of getting a gig solely because of its visuals.

With an editor, a production company can also offer up its post-production services and software to create a strong editing reel. With the latest changes in technologies/software such as Adobe Creative Cloud, an editor can make significant changes to his or her editing/VFX reel.

Likewise with cinematographers (or directors of photography), a production company with a wide breadth of experience can augment a DOP’s skills by having them work alongside its experienced directors/videographers and producers. A skilful production company is able to execute difficult shots and work with different perspectives to create a coherent vision. This will ultimately be reflected in any cinematographer’s reel.

Here at Key West Video, we aim to help improve emerging and experienced artists’ skills by providing them with the tool for successful reels. For more information on our services, visit our website today.
