We live in a world where anything is possible. And that now includes contact lenses that can record video.
According to Mashable, tech giants Sony, Google, and Samsung have all filed patents for smart contact lenses that take video, photos, can display information, and much more.
Though there isn’t too much information out yet, it seems as though wearers will be able to record their lives without a smartphone.
Should corporate and creative video production companies be worried?
The answer is a resounding no.
Operating similarly to apps on social media, the contact lenses gives the wearer the agency to record their own personal lives. Think of it as Instagram or Snapchat stories, but built-in for your retinas. It most likely will have sharing options for those who use it. But it in no way will compare to official corporate video for marketing, in-house, or training purposes.
It’s also unclear about what camera quality the camera lenses will have. Industry standards for corporate video are typically 1080p or 4K. Some smartphones don’t even shoot at these resolutions.
However, it would be cool if the contact lenses shared content. Assuming it is anything like Instagram or Snap, users may be able to upload previously recorded video content to their eye network in addition to live content.
All in all, contact lenses being able to record video is a great move. The wearer can record key moments in their lives without having to pull out a smartphone. Though it’s unclear whether it’ll allow more features (like showing others what you do in real time), it’s a cool feature nonetheless.
